About the Artist

Cathy Zverev

I am a BFA Graphic Design major. My interests include drawing, cooking, pets, and spreadsheets. When I graduate, I would like to focus on creating an original webtoon or animated short/movie.

Art, like life, is a journey. Previously, I focused on creating art that was aesthetically pleasing to look at without much substance or deeper meaning. My personal journey achieved through therapy, coupled with my time at Adams State, has grown my desire to create art with deeper meaning. Presently I feel connected to my art on an emotional and intellectual level. A thread that winds through my artwork is the connection I have with the subject. I wish to give pieces of hope, understanding, acceptance, compassion, and forgiveness. I found these through therapy.

I focus on details to immerse myself within my artwork. Part of my artistic process involves connecting with my art. I want my art to reflect reality and do so by choosing naturalistic styles based in realism. Narrative is an intrinsic part of my artistic process. I build artwork based off of the story of a character. The character’s emotions, actions, and motivations are important for me to understand and then create the character. This mode of creation has been a part of my process for as long as I can remember. I want people to engage with the story that my art tells. I start with the eyes of my character, giving them as much emotion and depth as I can. I then work on the rest of the details of the face and posture to convey the emotion of the character.

Some of my favorite artists are:

Becca Golins (@dragonsandbeasties) a polymer clay artist who specializes in cute dragons.

Ben Hed (@pet_foolery) a web comic artist who creates fun and heartfelt comics
